Description
Centered in the pharyngeal wall, the superior pharyngeal constrictor forms a broad muscular sheet at the level of the nasopharynx and upper oropharynx, with fibers coursing posteromedially toward the median pharyngeal raphe. Superiorly it relates to the pharyngobasilar fascia and the skull base, while inferiorly it overlaps the middle pharyngeal constrictor in the typical shingled arrangement of the constrictor group. Laterally, the muscle’s margin approaches the carotid sheath region, where the common and internal carotid arteries run deep to the sternocleidomastoid, accompanied by the internal jugular vein, and regional lymph nodes align along the jugular chain.
