Description
Posteriorly, the superficial venous network is traced over the calf and thigh, with the small saphenous vein ascending in the midline of the posterior leg from the lateral marginal vein of the foot toward the popliteal fossa. Deep to the fascia, the popliteal vein lies central and slightly medial within the fossa, continuing proximally as the femoral vein after passing through the adductor hiatus. Perforating veins are suggested as short connectors between superficial tributaries and the deep venous system, and paired venae comitantes accompany the tibial and fibular (peroneal) arteries in the posterior compartment. Blue-caliber contrast helps distinguish larger conduits from venules. A posterior perspective matters because many clinically relevant venous problems declare themselves behind the knee and along the calf. Small saphenous reflux and popliteal vein pathology can present with posterior varicosities, calf heaviness, or edema, and mapping the saphenopopliteal junction is a routine step in duplex ultrasound for chronic venous insufficiency. The relationship of the popliteal vein to the popliteal artery (typically superficial to it) also frames why popliteal entrapment patterns and iatrogenic injury risk differ during posterior approaches to the knee. Use this artwork for teaching lower-limb venous return in gross anatomy, vascular surgery, and sonography curricula, or for publication figures on varicose veins, venous thromboembolism in the femoropopliteal segment, and endovenous ablation planning for the small saphenous vein.
