Description
Posterior surface anatomy of the male lower limb is rendered with the superficial venous network traced over the gluteus maximus, hamstring compartment (biceps femoris laterally, semitendinosus and semimembranosus medially), and the calf dominated by gastrocnemius with soleus deep and distal. Superficial venous tributaries course in the subcutaneous tissue and cross the gastrocnemius bellies toward the popliteal fossa, with longitudinal channels tracking along the posteromedial and posterolateral leg. The great saphenous territory is suggested medially, while the small saphenous vein pathway is emphasized posteriorly as it ascends from the lateral foot and posterior ankle toward the midline calf. Posterior venous anatomy matters because the small saphenous vein and its variable terminations frequently drive clinical decisions in chronic venous insufficiency and varicose vein surgery, where reflux patterns differ from those of the great saphenous system. This view also clarifies where perforating veins commonly connect superficial channels to the deep venous system along the posterior calf, a common site for symptomatic varicosities and a frequent target during duplex ultrasound mapping and endovenous ablation planning.
