Description
Anteriorly, the venous drainage of the male pelvis and proximal lower limbs is traced from the thigh toward the inguinal region, where the femoral vein continues as the external iliac vein superior to the inguinal ligament. Medially along the thigh and knee, the great saphenous vein courses in the superficial fascia and approaches the saphenofemoral junction, where it pierces the cribriform fascia to join the femoral vein. Smaller superficial tributaries and perforating veins link the superficial network to the deep system along the medial and anterior thigh. Deep venous channels track in parallel to the arterial axis. Understanding the superficial to deep connections at the groin matters in day to day vascular practice because reflux at the saphenofemoral junction drives common patterns of varicose veins and directs the targets for endovenous ablation or surgical ligation. The anterior perspective also supports orientation for femoral venous access, where the vein lies medial to the femoral artery within the femoral triangle and is vulnerable to inadvertent arterial puncture or retroperitoneal bleeding if access is too high near the external iliac segment.
