Description

Posteriorly, the deltoid muscles cap the glenohumeral joints as thick, triangular sheets, with emphasis on the posterior (spinal) part arising from the spine of the scapula and sweeping laterally to the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus. Medial to the deltoid, the trapezius spans from the occiput and cervical region toward the acromion and scapular spine, while the rhomboid major and minor sit deep and medial along the vertebral border of the scapula. Inferiorly, the latissimus dorsi forms the posterolateral contour of the trunk, and distally the triceps brachii occupies the posterior compartment of the arm. Clear landmarks. Posterior deltoid anatomy matters any time you need to explain shoulder extension and external rotation in a scapulohumeral context, because its line of pull changes with arm position and overlaps functionally with the latissimus dorsi and teres major.
