Description
Running along the posterolateral forearm, the extensor digiti minimi (EDM) is shown superficial within the extensor compartment, arising from the lateral epicondyle region and coursing distally toward the ulnar side of the wrist. Its tendon passes deep to the extensor retinaculum in the dorsal wrist and continues toward the little finger, lying medial to extensor digitorum tendons as it approaches the metacarpophalangeal region. The ulna sits medial and the radius lateral in anatomic position, with the carpal bones and metacarpals forming the distal skeletal backdrop. Orientation is posterior. EDM matters because it is a frequent point of confusion with extensor digitorum when teaching independent extension of the fifth digit, and that distinction becomes clinically relevant in tendon lacerations over the dorsoulnar hand and wrist. At the level of the distal radioulnar joint and ulnar head, the tendon’s course under the extensor retinaculum frames common sites of tenosynovitis and attritional rupture in inflammatory arthropathy, where dorsal wrist pain and loss of small finger extension can be the presenting deficit. Surgeons also use these dorsal extensor compartments as landmarks during approaches to the wrist, and EDM often serves as a reference when identifying the 4th and 5th extensor compartments. Use this posterior forearm and hand rendering in gross anatomy and kinesiology teaching to pair tendon trajectory with bony landmarks, or in operative manuals discussing dorsal wrist exposure and extensor tendon repair zones. It also fits well in radiology or ultrasound instruction when correlating surface anatomy with extensor compartment localization at the wrist.
