Arising from the posterior compartment of the forearm, the extensor digiti minimi tendon courses distally and superficially toward the dorsum of the wrist, where its synovial tendon sheath (vagina tendinis) encloses it as it passes deep to the extensor retinaculum. Positioned ulnar to extensor digitorum communis and radial to extensor carpi ulnaris, it continues onto the dorsal aspect of the hand to join the extensor expansion of the fifth digit.
