Description
Centered in the superficial posterior compartment of the male forearm, the extensor digiti minimi (EDM) appears as a narrow muscle belly arising from the common extensor origin at the lateral epicondyle and running distally alongside extensor digitorum. Its tendon courses deep to the extensor retinaculum in the fifth dorsal compartment, passing posterior to the distal ulna near the ulnar styloid before heading to the little finger. Medially, extensor carpi ulnaris frames the ulnar border of the posterior forearm, while more laterally the extensor digitorum tendons fan toward digits two through five. Distal to the wrist, the EDM tendon blends into the extensor expansion over the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint. A posterior view is the practical way to teach why the EDM can extend the little finger relatively independently from the other digits, and why that independence can be lost when the tendon is injured or adherent. Clinicians also care about its tight relationship to the extensor retinaculum and ulnar-sided wrist anatomy, where dorsal compartment pathology and inflammatory synovitis can restrict tendon glide or cause pain with resisted extension.
