Posteriorly, the occipital belly of the occipitofrontalis (occipitalis), also termed the posterior part of the epicranius, spans the occipital bone and converges superiorly into the galea aponeurotica (epicranial aponeurosis) across the vertex. Inferior fibers sit just above the superior nuchal line and external occipital protuberance, with the midline nuchal region and occipital contour acting as clear bony reference points. Below the scalp layer, the upper cervical vertebrae align in the midline, while the scapulae lie posterolateral on the thoracic wall with the superior angles oriented toward the lower cervical spine. Upper ribs appear laterally, anchoring the shoulder girdle region in space. Scalp mobility depends on the tension relationship between the occipitalis and frontalis across the galea, so a posterior view is the clearest way to teach how the occipital belly retracts the scalp and stabilizes the aponeurosis during eyebrow elevation.
