Description
Seen from a posterior full body perspective, the occipital belly (venter occipitalis) of the occipitofrontalis, also termed the epicranius, lies as a broad, flat muscular sheet over the squamous part of the occipital bone. Its fibers arise along the lateral two thirds of the superior nuchal line and the mastoid region of the temporal bone, then course superiorly to blend into the galea aponeurotica (epicranial aponeurosis) across the posterior scalp. Lateral to the midline, the muscle abuts the posterior auricular region, while deeper planes imply the underlying occipital protuberance and nuchal contours. Orientation is clean. This posterior emphasis matters because the occipital belly is the fixed anchor for frontalis-driven scalp movement, and you can teach that the muscle inserts into an aponeurosis rather than a bony landmark, a point that trips students when they try to map facial expression muscles like skeletal limb muscles. Clinically, the occipital region is a common site of tension-type headache and occipital neuralgia workups; correlating the superficial epicranial musculature with the deeper course of the greater occipital nerve (C2) helps frame palpation findings and injection planning. It also supports discussions of scalp layers, where the dense connective tissue and galea define why scalp lacerations can gape.
