Description
Running along the posterolateral forearm, the radial artery is traced from the brachial artery bifurcation in the cubital fossa toward the distal radius and wrist, where it approaches the dorsum of the hand near the anatomical snuffbox. Proximally it lies lateral to the ulnar artery and deep to the superficial fascia, while the cephalic vein courses more superficially along the lateral border of the forearm. Distally, the vessel tracks close to the radius, passing between the brachioradialis and the lateral group of wrist extensors, with small arteriolar branches implied as it supplies the deep tissues en route to the hand. Orientation is posterior, with the limb supinated (palm up), so dorsal forearm relationships read clearly. Posterior presentation matters because it matches the operative and procedural reality of the distal radial artery in the snuffbox, a site now used for arterial cannulation and transradial catheterization when the volar approach is unfavorable. That same corridor is also where clinicians palpate for a distal radial pulse and where lacerations near the radial styloid can injure the vessel with brisk bleeding. Seeing the artery in relation to the superficial venous pathway helps explain why lateral forearm venipuncture and arterial access can be confused in low-light or shock states. Clean landmarks. Few excuses. Use this artwork in gross anatomy teaching on upper limb vasculature, in nursing and paramedic training modules on arterial line placement and IV access safety, or in surgical and interventional cardiology publications discussing conventional versus distal transradial access. It also supports patient-facing diagrams for post-catheterization care that need accurate surface-to-deep correlation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
