Description
Posteriorly, the thoracic cage and vertebral column frame the lower back, with the spinous processes of the lower thoracic vertebrae leading inferiorly into the larger lumbar vertebrae and the sacrum. Along the laminae and transverse processes, the rotatores lumborum are presented as short, deep slips of the transversospinalis group, running superomedially from a transverse process to the lamina and spinous process of the vertebra above, most apparent across the upper lumbar segments. Laterally, the ribs arc around the thorax, while inferiorly the iliac crests and posterior pelvis anchor the lumbosacral junction in context. Deep anatomy, cleanly isolated. Rotatores are easy to dismiss because of their size, but this view makes their segmental pattern obvious, which is exactly what you need when teaching coupled motion and the fine control of lumbar rotation. Their intimate relationship to the zygapophysial (facet) joints and vertebral arches places them in the same surgical neighborhood as midline posterior approaches for decompression or instrumented fusion, where the dissection plane between superficial erector spinae and deeper transversospinales becomes relevant. Pain generators often sit nearby. Facet arthropathy and pars interarticularis stress injuries both live in this posterior column. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules when you want learners to distinguish transversospinalis layers (multifidus versus rotatores) and to map muscle fiber direction onto vertebral landmarks, or in spine surgery and interventional pain publications discussing posterior element pathology and approach corridors.
