Description
Clavicula anatomy is presented from a superior aspect, centering on the body (shaft) and its characteristic S-shaped planform between the sternal (medial) end and the acromial (lateral) end. The medial two thirds bow anteriorly and appear more rounded in cross-section, while the lateral third flattens and sweeps posteriorly as it approaches the acromion, placing the lateral margin more posterior relative to the medial segment. Along the superior surface, you can appreciate the smooth subcutaneous contour and the gradual change in width from the thicker medial shaft to the thinner lateral segment. Curvature is the headline. That superior outline matters in day-to-day orthopaedics because most clavicle fractures occur at the junction of the middle and lateral thirds, where the change in curvature and cross-sectional geometry coincides with a mechanical weak point and common displacement patterns (medial fragment pulled superiorly by sternocleidomastoid, lateral fragment tending to drop with the weight of the upper limb). For operative fixation, the superior surface is a standard corridor for plate placement, and this fixed perspective helps you judge how the shaft twists and flattens as it transitions toward the acromial end, a frequent site of implant prominence in thin patients.
