Description
Clavicle (collarbone) shaft anatomy is centered on its slender S-shaped body bridging the medial sternal end and the lateral acromial end of the shoulder girdle. The medial two thirds of the shaft bow anteriorly, while the lateral third curves posteriorly, creating the characteristic double curve that is easiest to appreciate along the superior border. Inferior surface morphology contrasts sharply with the smoother superior surface, with a longitudinal subclavian groove running along the midshaft and roughened attachment areas positioned more laterally and posteriorly. Orientation is unambiguous. These contours matter because the clavicle is both a strut and a common failure point in trauma, with fractures clustering near the junction of the middle and lateral thirds where the shaft transitions in curvature and cross-sectional thickness. Inferiorly, the proximity of the subclavian vessels and brachial plexus to the undersurface frames the clinical stakes in displaced fractures and in operative fixation, where plate placement and screw length must respect the subclavian groove and the thinner inferior cortex.
