Description
Rendered on an Asian adult female head with partial transparency, the facial and scalp musculature is exposed from the calvaria to the upper neck, with the frontalis and occipitalis connected by the epicranial aponeurosis (galea aponeurotica) spanning the cranial vault. Around the orbit, the orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure while the corrugator supercilii and procerus sit more medially at the glabella and nasal bridge. Inferiorly, the orbicularis oris forms the perioral sphincter, with the zygomaticus major and minor coursing inferomedially from the zygomatic bone toward the upper lip, and the buccinator lying deeper in the cheek; superficial vessels (red and blue) and cutaneous nerves (yellow) track between these muscle layers and the overlying skin. Arterial and venous pathways in the face and temporal region give this plate its teaching value, because they correlate directly with the dangerous triangle of the face and with common bleeding points in facial trauma. Facial artery tortuosity near the oral commissure, superficial temporal vessels over the temporal fascia, and the infraorbital and mental neurovascular bundles explain why lacerations, filler injections, and maxillofacial approaches can cause brisk hemorrhage or sensory loss. Nerve mapping also supports motor anatomy: branches of the facial nerve distribute across the parotid-masseteric region to supply the muscles of facial expression. Surface anatomy meets deep risk. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy courses, otolaryngology and plastic surgery teaching files, and textbook figures on facial expression, vascular territories, and nerve distribution relevant to local anesthesia and cosmetic procedures. It also fits patient-facing counseling for facelift, blepharoplasty, and trauma repair when you need an accurate, non-cartoon view of layered anatomy. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
