Description

Anterior facial musculature is rendered over the cranium and mandible, with the frontalis spanning the forehead superior to the supraorbital margins and blending inferiorly with the corrugator supercilii and procerus at the glabella. Circumferential fibers of orbicularis oculi encircle the palpebral fissure, while the zygomaticus major and minor course inferolaterally from the zygomatic bone to the modiolus at the angle of the mouth, where they interdigitate with orbicularis oris and adjacent elevators and depressors of the lip. Along the lateral face, the masseter runs from the zygomatic arch to the angle and lateral ramus of the mandible, and the platysma lies superficial in the anterolateral neck, extending from the superficial fascia of the upper thorax toward the inferior border of the mandible. Landmarks are clear. This anterofacial arrangement matters because surface expression muscles track facial nerve territory, and small shifts in fiber direction explain the pattern of asymmetry seen in peripheral facial nerve palsy, from incomplete eye closure (orbicularis oculi) to a flattened nasolabial fold and impaired smile vector (zygomaticus). The masseter’s position over the mandibular ramus also aligns with common clinical targets, including botulinum toxin injection for masseter hypertrophy or bruxism and palpation during temporomandibular disorder assessment, where tenderness and clenching change the contour immediately anterior to the parotid region. Platysma bands in the neck provide another practical correlate for aging changes and for planning superficial dissections that must respect the cervical branch of the facial nerve. Ideal for head and neck anatomy teaching in dental, speech-language pathology, and medical gross anatomy courses, this artwork also supports atlases and patient-facing materials on facial nerve palsy, TMJ dysfunction, and cosmetic injection mapping. Surgeons and trainees can reference the muscle vectors when discussing rhytidectomy planes, parotid approaches, and safe superficial landmarks in the face and anterior neck. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
