Description

Presented in a layered, semi-transparent head and neck rendering of an adult female, the superficial muscles of facial expression are shown draped over the cranial and facial skeleton, with the frontalis and temporalis superiorly and the orbicularis oculi encircling the orbital rim. Inferior and anterior to the zygomatic arch, the zygomaticus major and minor course from the zygomatic bone toward the modiolus, while the orbicularis oris surrounds the oral fissure and blends with fibers of the buccinator deep to the cheek. Posterior to the commissure, the masseter occupies the lateral ramus of the mandible, and the platysma extends inferiorly across the anterolateral neck, superficial to deeper cervical structures. Fat compartments, including the buccal fat pad, are integrated to clarify facial contour. Clinical relevance sits at the interface of muscle, nerve, and vessel. Branches of the facial nerve (temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, cervical) traverse the parotid region and fan across the face in planes that matter during rhytidectomy, parotidectomy, and repair of facial lacerations. Small errors change outcomes. The facial artery’s tortuous course across the mandible and toward the nasolabial region, along with paired veins and sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve (infraorbital, mental), also informs safe placement of dermal fillers, botulinum toxin injections, and flap design. Use this artwork for head and neck anatomy teaching, plastic and reconstructive surgery atlases, dermatology and aesthetic medicine training decks, and patient-facing explanations of facial nerve injury patterns and muscular imbalance after Bell palsy or trauma. It also works well in radiology correlation handouts when orienting learners to surface anatomy landmarks before CT or MRI review. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
