Description
Spanning the anterolateral neck as a broad, thin sheet, the platysma is highlighted over the superficial cervical fascia from the inferior border of the mandible to its lower attachments along the clavicle and upper thoracic fascia. Superiorly, fibers blend with the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) and insert into the skin and fascia of the lower face, while medially the right and left platysma approach the midline over the laryngeal prominence. Deep to this layer lie the infrahyoid strap muscles and the sternocleidomastoid margins, but the illustration keeps attention on the subcutaneous plane that surgeons actually dissect. Breast (mammary) tissue is rendered over the pectoral region, with the surrounding major muscle groups shown for whole-body orientation in anatomical position. Platysma anatomy matters most when you care about the skin. Age-related laxity and decussation patterns at the midline contribute to anterior neck banding, a common target in cervicoplasty and rhytidectomy planning, where the dissection stays superficial to protect the cervical branch of the facial nerve as it crosses the mandible. It is also the muscle you reference when teaching the superficial fascia versus deep cervical fascia concept, since the platysma is essentially the muscular component of the superficial fascia in the neck.
