Description
Posterior superficial musculature of an adult female is rendered from the occiput to the plantar aspect of the foot, with the trapezius spanning from the external occipital protuberance and nuchal ligament inferiorly to the spine of the scapula, and the deltoid capping the lateral shoulder. Inferior to the trapezius, the latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally over the thoracolumbar fascia toward the humerus, while the erector spinae columns lie parallel to the vertebral spinous processes in a medial position. Along the upper limb, the triceps brachii occupies the posterior arm proximal to the olecranon, and in the lower limb the gluteus maximus overlies the posterior pelvis, giving way distally to the hamstring group (biceps femoris laterally, semitendinosus and semimembranosus medially) and then to the gastrocnemius and soleus converging into the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon. Posterior anatomy is where common pain generators and surgical corridors intersect. Thoracolumbar fascia and the erector spinae complex are frequent reference points in low back pain teaching and in planning posterior approaches to the lumbar spine, and the relationship of the gluteus maximus to the iliotibial tract helps explain lateral hip pain patterns and gait compensation. The calf compartment and Achilles tendon matter in sports medicine and orthopedics, where tendinopathy and rupture are assessed clinically by plantarflexion strength and the Thompson test. Landmarks drive decisions. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and kinesiology courses to teach layered organization of muscle, tendon, and fascia, or in rehabilitation materials to map posterior chain strengthening from scapular stabilizers to hip extensors.
