Description
Posterior surface anatomy of an adult female is rendered with the superficial and select intermediate skeletal muscles exposed from the occiput to the calcaneus. Superiorly, the trapezius spans from the nuchal region to the scapular spine, flanked laterally by the posterior deltoid overlying the rotator cuff region, while the latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally toward the humerus. Along the midline, the erector spinae columns run longitudinally adjacent to the spinous processes, and inferiorly the gluteus maximus occupies the posterolateral pelvis above the hamstrings, which descend to the knee where the gastrocnemius forms the calf bulk proximal to the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon. Posterior muscle relationships matter when you need to explain extension, external rotation, and postural control in one coherent view, and when you need landmarks that clinicians actually palpate. For procedures, the gluteal region is a teaching staple, since safe intramuscular injection targets the superolateral quadrant to avoid the sciatic nerve coursing deep and inferior.
