Description
Spanning the anterior aspect of the adult male body, the superficial venous network is traced in blue from the head and neck through the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and into the upper and lower limbs. Along the left chest and upper extremity, the cephalic vein ascends on the anterolateral forearm and arm toward the deltopectoral groove, while the basilic vein courses more medially, linked at the cubital fossa by the median cubital vein overlying the bicipital aponeurosis. Distal to the wrist, dorsal and palmar venous channels in the hand form a branching plexus superficial to the metacarpals and phalanges, with the pectoralis major and biceps brachii providing clear soft tissue landmarks beneath the cutaneous vessels. Orientation is straightforward. Anterior, full-length. Surface veins matter because clinicians access them. The median cubital vein remains the workhorse site for phlebotomy and peripheral cannulation, but its proximity to the brachial artery and the median nerve at the antecubital fossa makes depth and trajectory worth teaching, particularly when anatomy varies or veins are small. Proximally, following the cephalic vein into the deltopectoral triangle also frames common routes for IV placement and highlights why upper-limb superficial thrombophlebitis can track along a visible cord, with localized tenderness and erythema.
