Description
Running along the greater curvature of the stomach, the gastroepiploic (gastro-omental) vein is traced in anterior perspective within the fatty apron of the greater omentum, coursing parallel to the gastroepiploic artery as it gives off omental and gastric tributaries. Superior to this vascular arcade sit the stomach and left lobe of the liver beneath the costal margin, while inferiorly the omentum drapes over the transverse colon and the coils of small intestine. Blue venous channels and red arterial counterparts form a layered network against the anterior abdominal viscera. Orientation is straightforward. Venous anatomy along the greater curvature matters when you are teaching foregut venous drainage and when you are planning or interpreting procedures that traverse the gastrocolic ligament, because the gastroepiploic vessels are routinely encountered and can be a source of bleeding if injured. In oncologic gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy, surgeons often ligate the right and left gastroepiploic vessels near their origins, and clear understanding of their relationship within the greater omentum helps explain the operative planes and nodal stations along the greater curvature. The same corridor is opened in bariatric surgery and during mobilization of the stomach and transverse colon, where small venules in the omentum can avulse with traction. Ideal for gross anatomy and surgical anatomy teaching, this plate also supports figures in GI surgery texts covering gastroepiploic vessel ligation, omentectomy, and access to the lesser sac, and it reads well in clinical education materials on foregut blood supply and venous return in an adult male.
