Description
Anterior abdominal anatomy is arranged to emphasize the marginal artery (arteria marginalis coli) coursing near the mesenteric border of the large intestine, forming a continuous arterial arcade from the cecum and ascending colon across the transverse colon to the descending and sigmoid colon. Colic branches from the superior mesenteric artery and inferior mesenteric artery approach the bowel medially through the mesocolon and anastomose along the colic circumference, with accompanying marginal veins tracking in parallel. Small arterioles radiate from the arcade toward the colonic wall. A short, clear map of collateral flow. Autonomic nerves (sympathetic fibers via the superior and inferior mesenteric plexus, and parasympathetic input from the vagus nerve proximally and pelvic splanchnic nerves distally) run with the mesenteric vessels, reflecting the close neurovascular coupling that governs motility and vascular tone. Clinically, this anterior perspective helps you relate the marginal artery to watershed territories at the splenic flexure (Griffiths point) and rectosigmoid junction (Sudeck point), where hypoperfusion and ischemic colitis often declare themselves. It also aligns with operative decision-making during left hemicolectomy, sigmoid resection, and high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery, when the integrity of the marginal artery determines whether remaining colon stays perfused.
