Description
Shown from an anterior abdominal perspective, the right colic artery branches from the superior mesenteric artery and courses laterally toward the ascending colon, where it divides into ascending and descending branches within the mesocolon. Along its route, small cecal and ileocolic region vessels are suggested near the ileocecal junction, while marginal arterial channels trace the medial border of the right colon adjacent to the haustrated wall. Deep and midline, the abdominal aorta lies slightly left of the inferior vena cava, with accompanying mesenteric veins in blue paralleling the arterial arcade. Autonomic nerve fibers and lymphatic collectors with regional nodes track alongside the superior mesenteric vessels toward the root of the mesentery. This view matters when you need to teach or plan around the variable arterial supply of the right colon. The right colic artery is absent or replaced by branches of the ileocolic or middle colic arteries in a substantial minority of patients, a point that directly affects vascular pedicle selection during right hemicolectomy and complete mesocolic excision. Misidentification at the superior mesenteric artery can lead to ischemia of the remaining colon or troublesome bleeding near the superior mesenteric vein. Small target. Real consequences.
