Description

Arising from the superior mesenteric artery on the anterior aspect of the mesenteric root, the right colic artery courses laterally toward the ascending colon, dividing into ascending and descending branches along the medial border of the colon. Its distal arcades track within the mesocolon and align with the taeniae coli and haustral contour of the colonic wall. Superiorly, an anastomotic channel with the middle colic artery contributes to the marginal artery near the hepatic flexure, while inferior connections approach the ileocolic territory. Orientation stays in anatomical position. Right colic arterial anatomy is variable, and that variability matters at the right colon. During right hemicolectomy or extended right colectomy, surgeons either preserve or ligate the right colic branch depending on the planned lymphadenectomy along the superior mesenteric artery and the perfusion requirements of the remaining transverse colon. Ischemia at the hepatic flexure is a known risk when collateral flow through the marginal artery is limited, so a clear anterior look at the SMA trunk, right colic takeoff, and the pericolic arcade supports teaching of watershed patterns and operative planning. Use this illustration in abdominal anatomy and GI surgery curricula to explain SMA branch distribution to the colon, in colorectal oncology publications discussing vascular pedicles for D2 and D3 dissection, or in radiology teaching files when correlating CT angiography with mesenteric branch variants. It also fits patient education materials that need a precise depiction of colonic blood supply and anastomoses. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
