Description
Arising from the body of the pubis just inferior to the pubic crest, the adductor longus forms a superficial, fan shaped triangle on the anteromedial thigh, its muscle belly running inferolaterally toward the middle third of the femur. From an anterior perspective, its medial border lies adjacent to the gracilis, while its lateral border approaches the adductor brevis and pectineus proximally before tapering to a tendon inserting on the linea aspera. Superiorly, the muscle sits inferior to the inguinal region and pubic symphysis, and distally it blends into the medial compartment contours as it approaches the femoral shaft. Clear surface anatomy. Anterior visualization of the adductor longus matters because this muscle is a frequent site of athletic groin pain and proximal tendinopathy at the pubic origin, a pattern often seen in soccer, hockey, and sprinting populations. The relationship of its proximal fibers to the pubic ramus and adjacent adductor tendons helps clarify why adductor-related groin pain can overlap with osteitis pubis and why targeted palpation and resisted hip adduction reproduce symptoms. For procedural planning, this view supports orientation for ultrasound guided assessment or injection around the proximal adductor complex and for surgical consideration in chronic adductor longus tendinopathy. Use this plate in gross anatomy labs to teach medial thigh compartment organization and to introduce the adductor group before deeper dissection of adductor brevis and magnus. It also fits well in sports medicine texts and rehabilitation protocols illustrating adductor strain grading, return-to-play strengthening, and safe progression of resisted adduction exercises. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
