Description
Centered within the intercondylar notch, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is rendered as a taut, oblique fibrous band running from the anterior intercondylar area of the tibia proximally, posteriorly, and laterally toward the medial surface of the lateral femoral condyle. Distal to the femoral condyles, the tibial plateau is capped by articular cartilage, and a wedge-shaped meniscus sits between femur and tibia along the joint line. An anterior relationship is maintained to the posterior cruciate ligament pathway even when the PCL itself is not emphasized. Orientation stays true to anatomical position. An anterior view is the teaching-friendly way to explain why the ACL restrains anterior translation of the tibia relative to the femur and controls rotational stability during pivoting. That matters in the classic noncontact pivot-shift mechanism, where the ligament fails under combined valgus and internal rotation and the lateral compartment often shows associated meniscal injury. A small structure. Big consequences. The oblique course also helps clarify arthroscopic tunnel placement during ACL reconstruction, where femoral footprint selection and graft angle influence postoperative stability and the risk of graft impingement.
