Anterior to the thorax and left pectoral girdle, the subclavian artery continues as the axillary artery beneath the clavicle and over the first rib, then transitions distally into the brachial artery along the medial aspect of the upper arm. Venous return parallels this course, with the axillary vein medial to the artery and receiving the superficial cephalic vein in the deltopectoral groove, while the subclavian vein passes inferior to the clavicle toward the brachiocephalic vein and superior vena cava. Transparent muscular coverage logically reveals the pectoralis major anteriorly, the deltoid laterally, and the proximal humerus as the vessels curve around the shoulder. Small but instructive branches would be expected around the surgical neck of the humerus and scapular margin, including the anterior and posterior circumflex humeral arteries and the subscapular system. Relationship to the shoulder matters because the axillary vessels sit in the same crowded corridor as the cords of the brachial plexus, and their relative medial-lateral positions guide both examination and operative exposure. This view supports teaching the collateral pathways that protect limb perfusion when the axillary artery is compressed or injured, as in anterior shoulder dislocation or fractures at the proximal humerus where circumflex humeral branches can be torn. Central access lives here too, since the subclavian and axillary veins form common routes for central venous catheter placement, with the clavicle and first rib acting as hard boundaries.
