Description
Prominent in this anterior neck and shoulder view are the paired common carotid arteries ascending within the carotid sheath, then bifurcating superiorly into internal and external carotid arteries near the level of the thyroid cartilage. Lateral to the carotids, the internal jugular veins descend toward the root of the neck to join the subclavian veins and form the brachiocephalic veins, while the subclavian arteries course laterally beneath the clavicular region toward the axilla to supply the shoulder and upper limb. Smaller cervical branches from the external carotid system track anteriorly and superiorly toward the lower face and jawline, providing surface context around the mandibular border. The relationship is classic, arteries generally lie medial to the internal jugular veins within the sheath, with the venous channels presenting a larger, more collapsible caliber. Anterior orientation makes this plate useful for appreciating access corridors and danger zones in the lower neck. Central venous catheterization of the internal jugular vein depends on anticipating its position anterolateral to the common carotid, and on recognizing how head rotation and patient habitus can shift that relationship and raise the risk of carotid puncture. The depiction of the subclavian origin and its lateral course also speaks to compression and injury patterns at the thoracic outlet, as well as to surgical exposure in carotid endarterectomy where the carotid bifurcation level guides incision planning and cranial nerve risk. Use it in gross anatomy and head and neck surgery teaching to pair surface landmarks with the deep trajectory of the carotid and jugular vessels, or in procedural training materials for internal jugular and subclavian line placement, regional anesthesia, and trauma airway algorithms.
