Description
Centered in an anterior view of the male lower body, the profunda femoris (deep femoral) vein courses proximally in the thigh, deep to the sartorius and adductor longus, accompanying the profunda femoris artery along the posteromedial aspect of the femoral shaft. Medially at the groin, the femoral vein lies in the femoral triangle just medial to the femoral artery and receives the great saphenous vein at the saphenofemoral junction. Distally, superficial venous tributaries and venules form a branching network over the leg and dorsum of the foot, converging proximally toward the popliteal and femoral venous pathways. Blue coding differentiates the venous return from the arterial tree. Clinical relevance centers on the relationship between the deep femoral vein, the femoral vein, and the superficial system at the groin, where reflux at the saphenofemoral junction drives many cases of primary varicose veins and guides high ligation and stripping or endovenous ablation planning. Deep venous thrombosis also clusters in the femoropopliteal segment; appreciating where the profunda femoris vein joins the femoral vein helps interpret duplex ultrasound findings when calf symptoms persist despite a negative scan limited to the superficial femoral and popliteal veins. The caliber and depth of the deep femoral vein make it a key collateral route when the femoral vein is obstructed. A practical landmark.
