Description
Running deep to the adductor longus and sartorius, the deep femoral vein (vena profunda femoris) courses proximally in the medial thigh and converges with the femoral vein just inferior to the inguinal ligament. Perforating veins pass posteriorly toward the linea aspera, linking the deep venous drainage of the posterior compartment with the main profunda femoris trunk. Superficial to this axis, the great saphenous vein approaches the saphenofemoral junction, while inguinal lymph nodes and accompanying lymphatic vessels track alongside the femoral vessels within the femoral triangle. Relationships matter. For clinicians, the profunda femoris system is the major outflow channel for the deep thigh and a frequent collateral pathway when the femoral vein is thrombosed or surgically ligated, so understanding its position relative to the adductor canal and femoral triangle guides both diagnosis and operative planning. Venous duplex examinations and catheter-based interventions hinge on recognizing where the profunda femoris joins the femoral vein, a junction that can be obscured by overlying musculature and variable perforator anatomy. Groin dissections for melanoma or urologic malignancy also place the adjacent lymphatic collectors at risk, and postoperative lymphocele or lymphedema is easier to explain when the venous and lymphatic routes are considered together.
