Description
Frontal anatomy of the male shoulder and upper limb centers on the deltoid muscle as it drapes over the glenohumeral region and wraps from the lateral clavicle and acromion toward its insertion on the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus. The clavicular (anterior) fibers lie most anterior and slightly medial, while the acromial (middle) fibers form the thick lateral shoulder contour over the proximal humeral head. Deep and adjacent osseous landmarks are suggested by the visible skeleton: clavicle superiorly, humeral shaft distally, and the radius and ulna continuing into the wrist, carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. Radius sits lateral and ulna medial in anatomical position. Anterior deltoid anatomy matters because its fiber direction and relationship to the bicipital groove and pectoralis major influence shoulder mechanics and common pain generators. Injection technique is a practical example: the safe intramuscular deltoid site targets the thick mid-deltoid, roughly 2 to 3 fingerbreadths inferior to the acromion, to reduce risk to the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral vessels coursing around the surgical neck of the humerus. A clear anterior view also supports teaching scapulohumeral rhythm and why isolated abduction strength testing can implicate the deltoid versus a supraspinatus tear.
