Description
Prominent in this anterior shoulder view, the deltoid muscle forms a thick cap over the glenohumeral joint, with emphasis on its clavicular (anterior) part arising from the lateral third of the clavicle and sweeping inferolaterally toward the proximal humerus. Fiber direction converges to the deltoid tendon, which inserts on the deltoid tuberosity along the lateral shaft of the brachium. Medially, the muscle belly approaches the anterior shoulder crease, while laterally it wraps to define the rounded contour of the shoulder. The superficial layering is clear. For teaching shoulder mechanics, the clavicular head matters because it drives flexion and medial rotation of the arm, and it is recruited heavily when the shoulder elevates against resistance in the scapular plane. This anterior perspective also clarifies a frequent point of confusion, the deltopectoral interval, where the anterior deltoid meets pectoralis major and the cephalic vein often runs, a standard landmark for the deltopectoral surgical approach to the proximal humerus and shoulder.
