Description
Anterior male surface anatomy is rendered with the skin made translucent to reveal the deltoid muscles overlying a clearly drawn axial and appendicular skeleton. The clavicular (anterior) fibers of the deltoid arise from the lateral third of the clavicle and run inferolaterally to the deltoid tuberosity on the lateral humeral shaft, sitting lateral to pectoralis major and superior to the brachialis region. Laterally, the acromial portion caps the glenohumeral joint, while the scapular spine portion sweeps from posterior to lateral, completing the rounded shoulder contour against the rib cage and proximal humerus. Functionally, the deltoid is the prime mover for shoulder abduction beyond the first 15 degrees once supraspinatus initiates the motion, so this anterior view helps teach how clavicular fibers also contribute to flexion and horizontal adduction at the glenohumeral joint. It matters clinically. Anterior shoulder dislocation or proximal humeral fracture can injure the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery in the quadrangular space, producing deltoid weakness and sensory loss over the lateral shoulder (superior lateral cutaneous nerve of arm). The same surface topography guides safe intramuscular injection placement in the mid-deltoid, avoiding the surgical neck of the humerus and minimizing risk to neurovascular structures.
