Description
Seen through semi-transparent skin of an adult male upper torso, the deltoid muscle is isolated in red as it caps the glenohumeral joint and wraps from the lateral clavicle anteriorly to the acromion and scapular spine posteriorly. Its anterior, middle, and posterior fibers converge toward the lateral humerus at the deltoid tuberosity, lying superficial to the humeral head and the rotator cuff tendons. Deep landmarks remain readable through the transparency, including the sternum and ribs anteriorly, the vertebral column posteriorly, and the scapula positioned posterolateral to the thoracic cage. Shoulder contour is the point. Clinically, deltoid morphology matters because its middle fibers generate the initial power of arm abduction after the supraspinatus initiates the first degrees, and loss of deltoid bulk quickly flags axillary nerve dysfunction.
