Presented from an anterior perspective, the lumbar vertebra is dominated by the vertebral body, with the superior and inferior endplates framing it and the anterior cortex forming the ventral surface of the spinal column. A transverse, horizontal fracture line crosses the vertebral body, consistent with a compression-type injury pattern. The pedicles arise posterolaterally from the body and lead into the vertebral arch, although the spinous process and laminae sit posteriorly and are only indirectly implied from this view. Anterior visualization of a vertebral body fracture helps clarify what is failing structurally: the load-bearing cancellous bone beneath the endplates, often with anterior wedge collapse when flexion forces predominate. This is the pattern commonly discussed at the thoracolumbar junction (classically L1), where traumatic compression fractures and osteoporotic insufficiency fractures cluster and where burst fracture morphology raises concern for retropulsion into the vertebral canal.
