Description
Across a white-rendered male heart in anterior orientation, fine neural elements course over the epicardial surface in the expected distribution of the cardiac plexus, converging around the roots of the great vessels and then spreading inferiorly toward the atria and ventricles. Superiorly, nerve bundles cluster at the base of the heart near the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk, then descend along the anterior interventricular sulcus and right atrioventricular groove toward the apex. Small autonomic ganglia are suggested along these pathways, with fibers tracking alongside the coronary vasculature and over the right atrium, left atrium, and the anterior walls of both ventricles. Relationship cues are clear: plexiform networks sit anterior to the atrial chambers and great vessel origins, then taper distally toward the ventricular myocardium. Clinically, this anterior mapping matters because the superficial cardiac plexus and its branches provide the surgical and interventional context for autonomic modulation of rhythm and conduction.
