Description
Centered within the bony orbits of a frontal skull model, the paired inferior rectus muscles are shown coursing straight from the posterior orbit toward the anterior sclera of each globe. Each muscle originates near the common tendinous ring (annulus of Zinn) at the orbital apex and runs anteriorly along the orbital floor, inferior to the optic nerve and medial to the inferior oblique. The relationship to surrounding orbital margins, maxilla, and the infraorbital region can be appreciated in an anterior view, where left right symmetry and the muscle bellies’ alignment are easy to compare. A clean layout. Clinically, the inferior rectus is the primary depressor of the eye in abduction and a frequent source of restrictive strabismus after blowout fracture of the orbital floor, where the muscle or its fascial sleeve may become entrapped.
