Description
Running along the superolateral orbit, the lacrimal vein (vena lacrimalis) drains venous blood from the lacrimal gland and adjacent lateral orbital tissues toward the superior ophthalmic vein. From an anterior perspective, it is seen lateral to the globe within the orbital cavity, coursing posteriorly along the roof and lateral wall of the orbit near the frontal bone and zygomatic bone, with the lacrimal gland seated in the lacrimal fossa of the frontal bone. The surrounding skull landmarks, including the orbital rim, maxilla, and nasal bones, provide fixed reference points for the vessel’s position relative to the medial canthus and the nasolacrimal region. Small companion venules trace the glandular margin. Clear orientation. Venous anatomy in the orbit matters because the ophthalmic veins communicate with the cavernous sinus and lack valves, making pathways for retrograde spread from superficial facial veins clinically relevant. Infection from the “danger triangle” or periorbital cellulitis can progress through the angular vein into the superior ophthalmic vein, and tributaries near the lacrimal region help explain edema and congestion patterns in lateral eyelid infections or lacrimal gland inflammation (dacryoadenitis). For surgeons, mapping superficial and deep venous channels around the lacrimal fossa supports safer dissection in lateral orbitotomy and helps anticipate bleeding when working near the zygomaticofrontal suture and orbital roof. Faculty often need a clean anterior orbital venous reference for gross anatomy, head and neck blocks, and ophthalmology teaching when distinguishing lacrimal drainage structures from lacrimal vascular drainage.
