Description
Running distally across the palmar aspect of the male hand, the deep palmar arch gives rise to the palmar metacarpal arteries within the intermetacarpal spaces, where they course anterior to the metacarpals and deep to the flexor tendons before joining the common palmar digital arteries. Proximally, the arch is formed primarily by the radial artery with contribution from the deep branch of the ulnar artery, while more superficial venous channels are shown in blue returning blood proximally toward the wrist. Red arterial channels dominate the central palm, then narrow into smaller arterioles and capillary networks as they approach the web spaces. Spatial relationships read cleanly from proximal (wrist) to distal (digits). Palmar metacarpal arteries matter because they represent the deep collateral supply to the fingers and a frequent point of confusion with the more superficial common palmar digital arteries that arise from the superficial palmar arch. This anterior palmar perspective aligns with surgical and procedural thinking in the hand: lacerations in the central palm, deep infections tracking along tendon sheaths, and exposure during palmar approaches can jeopardize these vessels, and their anastomoses influence whether digital ischemia follows injury to the radial or ulnar inflow. A key teaching point. The relationship between the deep palmar arch and the metacarpal spaces also underpins interpretation of angiography and planning for microvascular repair. Use this plate in gross anatomy and upper limb dissection labs, in vascular and reconstructive hand surgery teaching files, and in medical publishing where a clear map of the deep palmar circulation is needed alongside superficial venous return.
