Description
Arterial anatomy of the palmar hand is presented from an anterior (volar) perspective, centered on the common palmar digital arteries arising from the superficial palmar arch. Each common palmar digital artery courses distally within the palm, positioned superficial to the interosseous muscles and deep to the palmar aponeurosis, then approaches the web spaces where it bifurcates into proper palmar digital arteries for adjacent sides of the fingers. The metacarpals sit dorsally as a scaffold, while the neurovascular bundles track along the medial and lateral margins of each digit. Clear branching. Understanding this arterial pattern matters when you are teaching the relationship between the superficial palmar arch, the common palmar digital arteries, and the clinically relevant proper digital arteries that can be injured by lacerations at the distal palmar crease or in the interdigital web space. This is also the map surgeons reference during palmar fasciectomy for Dupuytren disease and when planning local flaps, because the digital arteries and accompanying digital nerves run as paired bundles that are easy to compromise if the dissection strays too far volar or too far lateral. Bleeding control depends on knowing the split point.
