Description
Presented from an anterior neck and lower face perspective, the subclavian artery passes inferior to the clavicle at the root of the neck, with a fine periarterial nerve network (often termed the subclavian plexus) draped along its adventitia. Superior and medial to this course, the carotid sheath region is implied by the parallel red and blue vessels, and the cervical vertebrae form the deep posterior boundary behind the pharyngeal and prevertebral planes. Yellow nerve fibers extend laterally toward the supraclavicular fossa, where they blend conceptually with the proximal brachial plexus as it emerges between the anterior and middle scalene muscles and approaches the axilla. Maxilla, mandible, and dentition frame the superior field, orienting the viewer to the lower facial level above the thoracic inlet. This anterior relationship matters because sympathetic periarterial plexuses at the thoracic outlet can be irritated, stretched, or inadvertently disrupted during supraclavicular approaches, first rib resection, or subclavian artery exposure for vascular repair and bypass. Catheterization and central venous access placed in the subclavian region also benefit from a clear mental map of how nerves and vessels overlap in the confined costoclavicular space. Small anatomy, big consequences. Use this illustration for teaching cervical and upper thoracic neurovascular anatomy in gross anatomy, head and neck, and surgical anatomy courses, and for clarifying operative corridors in texts covering thoracic outlet syndrome, subclavian artery injury, or brachial plexus exploration. It also fits well in patient education materials explaining why symptoms can track from the neck into the upper limb when neurovascular structures are compressed beneath the clavicle.
