Description
Centered on the midface in anterior anatomical position, the superior lip levator complex is presented against a frontal view of the male facial skeleton, with the maxilla and infraorbital margin forming the key bony landmarks. Fibers arise just inferior to the orbital rim and lateral to the piriform aperture, then descend inferiorly toward the upper lip, lying lateral to the nasal bones and superior to the maxillary incisors. The relationship to the infraorbital foramen region is apparent, where the muscle belly sits superficial to the maxilla and adjacent to the anterior maxillary wall. Bony context includes the frontal bone and orbits superiorly, the nasal cavity midline, and the mandible and dentition inferiorly. Clear midline landmarks. Facial expression depends on small vectors. Elevation of the upper lip and deepening of the nasolabial fold are driven by levator labii superioris (and, when included, levator labii superioris alaeque nasi), and this anatomy matters when planning botulinum toxin injection patterns for gummy smile, upper lip retraction, or nasal flare that accompanies smiling.
