Description
Presented as a male anterior head and neck dissection beneath the dermal layer, the zygomaticus minor is visible coursing inferomedially from the zygomatic bone toward the upper lip, lying superficial to the maxilla and blending with the musculature of the upper lip near the nasolabial region. Nearby facial expression muscles are logically included in this field, including the zygomaticus major running more laterally toward the oral commissure, the levator labii superioris positioned medial to the zygomaticus minor along the lateral nose, and the orbicularis oris encircling the mouth. Laterally, the risorius may be seen extending from the parotid and masseteric fascia toward the angle of the mouth, helping define the superficial muscular plane over the cheek. Accurate placement of the zygomaticus minor matters when you teach or plan procedures around the nasolabial fold and upper lip. Weakness of this muscle, often grouped clinically with other midface elevators, can be appreciated in peripheral facial nerve palsy affecting zygomatic and buccal branches, where elevation of the upper lip and deepening of the nasolabial fold become asymmetric. Surgeons and injectors also track this vector when placing incisions for midface approaches or when using botulinum toxin and fillers near the levator labii superioris and zygomaticus complex, where small changes alter smile dynamics. Facial anatomy courses, ENT and plastics teaching files, and dental education modules use this view to orient students to the superficial musculoaponeurotic system layers and the relationship of the zygomatic bone to upper lip elevators.
