Description
Arising from the proper hepatic artery and coursing toward the left lobe, the left hepatic artery is traced from an inferior perspective as it approaches the porta hepatis and enters the hepatic parenchyma. The stomach is rendered semi-transparently in the foreground, so the lesser curvature and adjacent lesser omentum sit anterior to the arterial trunk while the proximal duodenum lies inferior and slightly to the right. A network of smaller gastric vessels spreads along the stomach wall, framing the left hepatic artery as it runs superiorly and medially toward the liver. Orientation is clear. This angle helps. An inferior vantage matters because it aligns with how surgeons and interventionalists encounter hepatic inflow at the hepatoduodenal ligament, where the proper hepatic artery and its left branch can be isolated, clipped, or catheterized. In hepatobiliary surgery, a replaced or accessory left hepatic artery arising from the left gastric artery is a common variant that can be injured during lymphadenectomy or lesser curvature dissection, with postoperative left lobe ischemia or bile leak as real consequences. Seeing the artery in relation to the stomach and proximal duodenum also supports teaching of why upper GI bleeding, embolization targets, and iatrogenic injury patterns cluster around the lesser curvature and porta hepatis. Suitable for anatomy lab handouts on foregut arterial supply, lecture slides on the celiac trunk to hepatic arterial tree, and operative primers for laparoscopic gastrectomy or left hepatic lobe mobilization where the lesser omentum is opened. It also reads well in radiology or IR teaching materials that correlate angiographic selection of the left hepatic artery with adjacent gastric branches.
