Description
Seen from below, the basal surface of the cerebral hemispheres frames the middle cranial fossa region, with the brainstem and cerebellum lying posteriorly and inferiorly in the field. The maxillary nerve (CN V2) is rendered in yellow as it courses anterolaterally from the trigeminal ganglion toward the foramen rotundum, giving off its meningeal branch (nervus spinosus) that turns back to the dura mater. Blue venous channels and dural venous sinuses sit superficial to the brain parenchyma, providing orientation around the skull base while the meningeal twig tracks along the floor of the cranial cavity. For teaching and for operative planning, this inferior perspective clarifies a point that is easy to miss in lateral skull diagrams: V2 is not only a conduit to the face, it also contributes sensory fibers to the dura of the anterior and middle cranial fossae via recurrent meningeal branches. That sensory pathway is clinically relevant in trigeminally mediated headache and in pain referral from dural irritation, and it sits near corridors used in endoscopic endonasal approaches to the pterygopalatine fossa and foramen rotundum.
