Description
Arising from the facial nerve (CN VII) after it exits the stylomastoid foramen and traverses the parotid gland, the zygomatic branch courses anterosuperiorly across the lateral face toward the zygomatic bone and the lateral orbital margin. From this anterior perspective, its rami spread over the malar prominence superficial to the zygomaticus major region, with terminal fibers directed toward orbicularis oculi and adjacent midface mimetic muscles. Bony landmarks remain clear beneath the nerve overlay, including the zygomatic bone laterally, the maxilla and maxillary dentition inferiorly, and the orbital rims superiorly, creating an immediate spatial reference for surface anatomy. Small connections with sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve (CN V), especially the maxillary division (V2) and its zygomaticofacial territory, are implied by the parallel distribution over the cheek. Damage to this branch matters because it weakens eyelid closure and midfacial expression, a pattern encountered in iatrogenic injury during parotidectomy, facelift dissection, or repair of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures. It also clarifies a common teaching point: the facial nerve supplies motor innervation to muscles of facial expression, while the trigeminal nerve carries cutaneous sensation, even when their fibers run in close proximity over the same maxillary and zygomatic contours.
