Description

Arising from the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) within the parotid region, the temporal branch courses superiorly and laterally across the zygomatic arch toward the temple and forehead. In anterior view, its arborization can be appreciated as it passes superficial to the temporalis fascia and distributes to the frontalis and the superior portion of orbicularis oculi, lying lateral to the lateral canthus and superior to the zygomatic bone. Surrounding landmarks include the auricle posteriorly, the masseter inferolaterally, and the sternocleidomastoid descending in the neck, with superficial vessels tracking nearby. This is the branch surgeons worry about in the temple. Temporal branch injury during facelift (rhytidectomy), temporal incision, or parotidectomy produces brow ptosis and impaired forehead wrinkling, and it can weaken eyelid closure by denervating the upper orbicularis oculi. The anterior perspective helps clarify its relationship to the zygomatic arch and the safe and danger zones used in dissection planes, where staying deep to the superficial temporal fascia (temporoparietal fascia) reduces the risk of iatrogenic neuropraxia. Use this artwork for head and neck anatomy teaching in medical, dental, and PA curricula when covering facial expression musculature and the extracranial course of CN VII. It also suits operative atlases and consent or patient-education materials for cosmetic facial surgery, temporal artery biopsy planning, and parotid or temporal region approaches where mapping the temporal branch guides incision placement. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
