Description
Arising from the facial nerve (CN VII) within the parotid region, the zygomatic branch courses anteriorly and superiorly across the lateral face toward the infraorbital margin, running superficial to the masseter and then toward the orbicularis oculi. Along its path, it travels in close company with the transverse facial vessels and adjacent parotid duct as it leaves the parotid gland, then fans into smaller motor twigs over the zygomatic bone. Surrounding facial expression muscles are rendered in layered detail, with the zygomaticus major and minor positioned inferior to the orbit and the levator labii superioris lying more medial, providing clear topographic context for the nerve’s terminal distribution. A tight anatomic corridor. Clinically, this branch matters any time you work near the lateral canthus or zygomatic arch, where motor injury can present as lower eyelid laxity and incomplete blink from orbicularis oculi weakness, increasing exposure keratopathy risk. It is also a key landmark in parotidectomy, facelift (rhytidectomy), and repair of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, where dissection planes and retraction can traction-injure peripheral facial nerve fibers. For teaching, the anterior perspective clarifies why distal branches remain vulnerable even when the main trunk is protected. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy courses to map CN VII from parotid emergence to periocular musculature, or in surgical atlases covering parotid surgery, orbital approaches, and facial trauma.
