Description
Oriented to the skull base, this inferior perspective centers on the maxilla and its palatine processes forming the anterior three quarters of the hard palate, meeting at the intermaxillary suture and continuing posteriorly to the transverse palatine suture with the horizontal plates of the palatine bones. The alveolar processes and maxillary dental arcades sit lateral to the midline palatine raphe, while the posterior margin of the hard palate opens into the choanae, bounded by the vomer medially and the pterygoid plates laterally. Posterolateral to the maxilla, the zygomatic processes and the pterygomaxillary region frame the infratemporal approach corridors, and the maxillary sinus footprint is implied superior to the alveolar ridge even when the sinus cavity itself is not opened. Mandible landmarks are included for occlusal reference. Clear separation. For dentistry and maxillofacial surgery, the inferior maxilla is where palatal morphology, tooth-bearing bone, and skull base landmarks intersect, and this view maps them without the visual noise of facial soft tissues. Palatal fractures, palatal vault asymmetry, and cleft palate repairs are planned around the palatine processes and their sutural boundaries, while posteriorly the relationship of the hard palate to the choanae and pterygoid region informs transpalatal and transnasal approaches. Sinus floor proximity matters, since maxillary molar apices may project toward the sinus and complicate extractions, implant placement, or an oroantral communication.
